A very watchable moralistic western with James Cagney's presence being key to its success.

It opens with three warnings against (contagious) too-eager gun-play (and finishes the same way) and one of the strangest ever train robberies, and features several (other) great Nicholas Ray touches (like a marriage proposal in jail), but its main theme is the typically 50's (but I think--and come to think of it, strangely--unusual for a western) one of juvenile delinquency.

For a film with James Cagney as star and Nicholas Ray as director it seems odd that this film is so little known, at least until you watch it. While the film certainly isn't bad in any way it isn't extraordinary either just a run of the mill western with a good cast. At the time it was probably swept aside by the other releases of the principles that year, Rebel Without a Cause for Ray and Love Me or Leave Me for Cagney both superior films to this. Still for western fans a pleasurable view.
