Enjoyable, fast-paced thriller with terrific action sequences and strong performances from the two leads, but it's also slightly too long and let down by some annoyingly guessable plot twists.

Thankfully, any bumps in the plot are steamrollered under director Espinosa's procession of breakneck chases, chaotic shoot-outs, and convincingly ugly fistfights.

has energy and vigor to spare, but it still feels too off-the-shelf--prepackaged action and all-too-familiar riffs on the ugliness of behind-the-scenes international conflict

Too standard in every way to count as a failure on any level.

While director Espinosa hones in on the ambiguous battle between Weston's idealism and Frost's cynicism, British cinematographer Oliver Wood - who filmed the last two Bourne movies - shoots the hell out of everything.

The powerful pairing of Washington and Reynolds as the cynical, idealistic agents respectively has plenty of promise, although the decision to use dizzying hand-held camera work intrudes on what could be a far more powerful and enjoyable film

Denzel and his apprentice Reynolds have terrific chemistry - to the point that you get irritated when the film keeps cutting back to Reynolds' low-wattage romance with a French medical student.

February 20, 2012
a curiously subdued film relying more on the charisma of its leading men, Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds, and on psychology rather than bombast for its suspense

Tolerably exciting spycraft, but stuck with a see-through plot. Washington and Reynolds are watchable, but not exactly stretched by these roles.

Why would you cast Denzel Washington, and then cut his performance to ribbons? Orson Welles once said that a film is made in the editing room. It also can be wrecked.

It's an insane, relatively predictable storyline and you'd think they'd be able to weave more humour into the mix.

A brutal, bloody action picture that follows a familiar corruption-in-high places theme.

Action-oriented blur of movie relies on Denzel Washington to hold it together

Movies don't come any brawnier than Safe House, and all that chaotic mayhem eventually beats the plot to a pulp.

If there's an iota of artistry or originality within a mile of this mess, fledgling writer David Guggenheim and director Daniel Espinosa, here making his Hollywood debut, succeed in keeping it top secret.
February 16, 2012
Despite a familiar plot, the solid acting and first-rate action scenes combine to make a movie that, while perhaps not terribly original, is certainly involving and entertaining.

Ryan Reynolds is in a decent movie!

Reynolds shows range as the tyro out of his depth, and Washington's mere presence grants credibility to implausible scenes.

This is a naive director with so little insight you wonder what comic books he's been reading.

Thanks to the excellence of Washington and Reynolds, Safe House provides the type of enjoyable performances that allow us to forgive the by-the-book nature of the story.
