Very reminiscent of several other A24 "Arthouse Horror" films of the past decade or so, however I do appreciate that in its final seconds the movie suddenly and rather brutally stops being coy about whether or not the supernatural elements are real.

Yowza, this kills. Rose Glass's 'Saint Maud' packs a walloping thematic punch right up my alley and is steeped in a bleak, spiraling slow-burn of loneliness, purpose, obsession, and salvation. As an allegorical offering, 'Maud' is a home run, though I admit the cracks will show a bit when dissected at face value (critics attack its politics in particular). As far as fleshing out Maud's backstory and building once the plot thickens, the film is tragically short - yet it's so conceptually tremendous and terrifically acted by both Morfydd Clark and Jennifer Ehle, that you'll be salivating for more. Bzowski's score lands at all the right moments, and that ending…that freaking ending. Right out the gate, Glass has joined the Eggers & Aster Class of Killer Debuts.

Less of a horror and more of a character study on the effects of isolation on a person's mental health and the lunacy of taking religion far too seriously. However you want to categorise it doesn't matter, though, as it's still a commanding debut from Rose Glass. This is a director with a solid handling on pace and the ability to tread that fine line between art and accessibility. A very strong piece of work and two excellent central performances from Morfydd Clark and Jennifer Ehle.
