Movie Info

Disco-gone-Latin, that's what's happening in Salsa, where a grease monkey who's sick and tired of knuckle-busting lives for his nights on the dance floor where he gyrates to the salsa beat. Not much plot but plenty of dancing is the fare here, as the lead guy (Robby Rosa) is out to show he's the Travolta of the Latino swing scene.

★★ (out of four) After the success of "Dirty Dancing" everyone wanted to make a dance movie. "Salsa" was one of the uninspired attempts to hit it big again. Robby Rosa plays a guy who wants to make more out of his life than just doing manual labor for the rest of his existence. He really wants to dance! At night be becomes the king of the hottest latin club on the planet, and breaks girls heart all the way to the dance floor. There isn't much going on except dancing. The film co-stars Rodney Harvey (pictured below) whose real life descended into drug addiction and death shortly after this film.

There is barely a plot to this cliche'd movie. Shallow and forgettable. The dancing is okay, but if it's a movie about dancing, it needs really great dancing to pull it off. The acting is fair, good music though.

One of my favorite 80's movies! Loved the music and dancing, with great music. Fun back in the day movie, when Salsa was it. :D Kenny Ortega is the choreographer to this cool dance movie.
