“Scarlet” curiously manages to be both too close to “Hamlet,” and not close enough, leaving this vengeance story in its own no man’s land. Go to Full Review

Despite any narrative quibbles, the movie deserves praise for its genuine call for compassion. Go to Full Review

The visuals dazzle, the plotting not so much in this gender-switched take on "Hamlet" as a warrior princess revenge epic from Japanese anime master Mamoru Hosoda. Go to Full Review

Although Scarlet is undeniably gorgeous, its story starts to lose its vitality as it pushes toward the climax, twisting itself into an almost impressive, romantically stale knot just to deliver an obvious message in the most roundabout way possible. Go to Full Review

The spirit is mystical, poetic, fierce and highly cinematic, the level of violence and intense scenes is extremely high – not recommended for young children. Go to Full Review

While Scarlet is a disappointing outing from the acclaimed director, there's beauty to be seen in the electrically crafted animation that tries its best to distract from a story that ends before it even truly begins Go to Full Review

Chima 9h interesting movie on hope and forgiveness. Seemed more tailored to women, though. See more S 11h Disappointing basic story revolving around a simple-minded good vs evil framework- violence is evil, non-violence is good and that the blame for cycles is the oppressed who are responsible for their reaction and anger torwards their oppressor with no conscience. and an unknown divine higher being will resolve the issue so you don't have to. See more Isaiah Q 13h I loved the change of pace See more Sam W 1d Scarlet is an incredible movie, between the visuals, the story, the world, and everything else. I've seen Mamoru Hosoda's past films and have always been in awe of how big they feel. Visually-speaking, the implementation of 3D animation, particularly in scenes which involve crowds and/or large expanses of space, really feel immersive (which is even better on the big screen). This movie was no exception to that, and in fact leaned into it. Every scene felt visually stunning, and the story was captivating and intense. I knew going into it that it was based off of Hamlet, and I loved seeing both everything that it had in common, and everything that made it unique. Watching this movie was exhilarating. Hosoda has outdone himself yet again! See more M 1d Excellent animation. Great fight scenes. If you like Hamlet and Your Name, you'll like this movie.
