Format-wise, the film may have benefited from being a more straightforward anthology of shorts based on the stories, which were effective because they were so brutally concise.

These and other spooky specters are memorably incarnated, to be sure. But I'm pretty easy to scare, and I can't say I found the movie, directed by Norway's Andre Ovredal of 2010's excellent Trollhunter, all that scary.

Scary Stories struggles to get around to making whatever additional point it had, instead using a wealth of in-between scenes to justify its feature-length format.

Good bones are what keep Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark upright.

The tension builds, the special effects are gruesome, and most of all the film is fun for both young and old moviegoers.

Blame the high expectations, but this adaptation feels bland and vague. Trailers should never be better than the actual movie. In this case they were. [Full review in Spanish].

A gothic horror story made with trade and knowledge, with the ability to scare through the noblest tools of cinema. [Full Review in Spanish]

The content feels too meek and derivative of other shows and movies and doesn't justify the criticism of the books.

Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark gets under your skin like a good campfire story should.

The 1968 setting lends some mild political heft to the proceedings - one of the main characters is a draft-dodger - but the film works best when it's simply trying to freak you out.

Is it, you know, scary, as the title foolishly promises? Well... no. Unless you're a tween who's never seen a horror movie before and, come on, who ever heard of such a thing?

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark is an efficient, attractive and well put together film. It didn't scare me at all, but in this most predictable and prescriptive of genres, that's hardly unusual.

Being a del Toro production, the grisly effects and monster designs are well above average, and provoke a lasting chill at odds with the lightweight tone of the picture.

The film is made by horror lovers... That joy exudes from the screen. [Full review in Spanish]

Director André Øvredal achieves something different for a story that we already know. [Full Review in Spanish]
