Scream 2 isn't nearly as fresh, suspenseful or witty as it's inaugural bloodfest.

There's a lot more going on here than in Scream... So why isn't it a slam dunk? Because of the writing, which is just lousy in any number of ways.

A bland limp sequel that fails to follow the act of the charismatic first film...

The film itself is stuck in a cycle of repetition, with slight variations.

Generally it disappoints.

It's not as good as the original.

Too serious to be funny and too light-hearted to be scary. Some of the characters in it talk about how sequels are inferior products, and the movie they're in doesn't prove them wrong.

It managed to take what started out as an interesting franchise and ruin it.

Williamson and Craven do a good job spoofing the first film, but they continue to drive some of the same points home over and over again.

Falls down exactly where Scream succeeded so brilliantly, getting itself hopelessly tangled up in exactly the clichs at which it purports to be poking fun.

Scream 2 wishes it were as cool as the original.

This disappointing sequel to last year's horror sleeper gets trapped in the clichés it's trying to send up.

Old-hand Craven delivers a delectably gruesome, well-crafted horror yarn that is crisply edited, inventively photographed and devilishly cast.

Wes Craven was born to direct this material. One of the most successful of horror filmmakers.

Its self-awareness has a brashness that can be enlivening.

Scream 2 is as clever and nerve-wracking as the original; on its own self-referential, crowd-pleasing terms, it's a success.
