Charming but messy take on the Christmas Carol story that works thanks to Bill Murray's great lead performance but is inconsistent due to Donner's direction. Murray is at his leading man best as Frank Cross, delivering big laughs with a nice sense of emotion, making you originally hate him for the jerk he is but hope he does find redemption. He gets great support from the rest of the cast, particularly Karen Allen as his lost love while Bobcat Goldthwait is hilarious as an employee fired on Christmas Eve. The problem with the film is behind the camera, as Richard Donner does not have the stylistic ability to pull off this twisted tale. In more straight-forward stories, like "Superman" & "Lethal Weapon", he's perfect but this film quite frankly needed the look of someone like Tim Burton. As a result, it just looks messy and inconsistent, though Danny Elfman does deliver a nice score. Overall, still a fun Christmas film that, despite it's flaws, make for fun holiday viewing.
