Season of the Devil (Ang Panahon ng Halimaw) (2018)
Critic Reviews for Season of the Devil (Ang Panahon ng Halimaw)
Diaz remains emphatically his own artist, whether to exhilarating or punishing effect: "Don't give in to the masses' sensibilities!" warns one of his typically catchy lyrics, and you can't say he doesn't practice what he preaches.
There's no way one could sit back and marvel comfortably at what Season of the Devil offers ─ and perhaps that's exactly Diaz's point.
Diaz is a filmmaker, writer and musician, and in Season Of The Devil he has found a way to combine all of those. It's probably one of his darkest films, and one that subverts the happiest genre in cinema history: musical.
Lav Diaz's call-to-arms to artists speaks to the present just as it depicts a terrible period in the Philippines' past. "Season of the Devil" is still a gruelling, advanced-level watch, but one that delivers beauty and horror in equal measure.
