Between a 6/10 and 7/10, it's a fine political drama with lots of comedy on the order of THE CANDIDATE and several others in the genre. Alda proved himself a good writer with this intelligent and observant screenplay.

Strong drama of morals and ambition. Alda does very well in the lead providing a strong center to the picture and he's aided by two superior actresses, one on the way up Meryl Streep and the other Barbara Harris always under appreciated. Meryl is vulnerable and appealing but Barbara Harris is the treasure, giving the film's best performance and providing the heart that would be missing with her contribution. Also notable is Melvyn Douglas giving another of the marvelous supporting performances that were a staple of the twilight of his career.

Interesting political drama, shows typical political dilemma: power and sex. Meryl Streep as a southern is amusing as well as the chemistry between her and Alan Alda.

Meryl Streep is the reason to see this. Her and Alda's first kiss is unforgettable. Politics run rampant, and one's interest in them determines their interest in the film. Alda's just a dry guy.

An interesting political drama that demonstrates what can happen to the best of us when tempted by power and sex. Alan Alda gives an excellent performance as Senator Joe Tynan, seduced by politics (and Meryl Streep). I love Streep as Karen Traynor, the southern belle who fuels Tynan's desires for power. Her subtle performance oozes both confidence and a sort of innocence, and is at times extremely funny. Its cast also includes Charles Kimbrough, perhaps better known for his role in one of my favourite TV shows, 'Murphy Brown'.

A good political film that Alan Alda is quite good in.
