A squadron of Japanese Self-Defense Force soldiers find themselves transported through time to their country's warring states era, when rival samurai clans were battling to become the supreme Shogun. The squad leader, Lt. Iba, sees this as the perfect opportunity to realize his dream of becoming the ruler of Japan. Audience Reviews for Sengoku jieitai (G.I. Samurai) (Time Slip)

G.I. Samurai (1979) The Japanese title for this is "Sengoku Jieitai" and is also known as "Time Slip" and "Time Wars". This movie sort of reminds me of the 1982 movie "TimeRider" about a moto-cross motorcycle racer that gets sent back into the old west. In this movie, a group of Japanese Self-Defense Forces soldiers on maneuvers, are sent back to ancient Japan. The leader, Lt. Yoshiaki Iba (Sonny Chiba) becomes caught up with the whole age of war and the ancient leader, Nagao Kagatori (Isao Natsuyagi) is happy to utilize the modern weaponry to help him with his aspirations to become Shogun. The movie has some great fight scenes, but tends to get bogged down with all of the dramatic characters. Plus the soundtrack is some unusual easy-listening music that doesn't really fit in with an action movie. I wish that I knew more about the various characters in Japanese history, I might be more aware of who they're talking about. There are some things that I liked about this movie as well as some things that I hated about it. It even gets into the whole space/time continuum, like what would happen if they killed their own ancestors. But, mostly it shows what jeeps, tanks, helicopters, and PT boats would do up against huge armies of samurai. It's a great concept and a nice try, but perhaps it doesn't translate very well.

I think I would've liked this one more if they hadn't gone out of their way to try and punch up the characterization, and just went for more action. The idea of modern military men fighting samurai is intriguing, but was kinda hamstrung by the silly 70's soundtrack and dragging plot. Rental.
