Heslov largely does an impressive job balancing the contestants' deeply disturbing stories with the near giddiness they express while getting dolled up. It's infectious.
A truly inspirational, emotional and profoundly moving film.
An unusual beauty pageant offers an emotionally vivid look at the lives of female veterans.
The participants profiled in Lysa Heslov's documentary are the epitome of resilience, but they're also disarmingly honest and funny as hell. In a word, they're irresistible.
[It is a] peculiar but ultimately endearing tale of women back from the front.
The film, just by putting its characters on screen for all to see, is [a] ... stirring tribute to their service. And that makes it well worth watching.
Served Like a Girl manages to inform the audience about its important subject matter in an always engaging way while also telling an entertaining story with as many twists and turns as one might find in a fictionalized counterpart.
It's not polished, but Lysa Heslov's documentary fully celebrates the courage of its featured women -- more off the battlefield than on -- and the result is a strong, teary, heartfelt film.
Neither Served Like a Girl nor The Work generated much enthusiasm for me based on their catalog descriptions alone. They turned out, however, to be the two most engaging and inspiring films at March's SXSW Film Festival.
Served Like a Girl does a sensitive job of showing the bravery of female soldiers in both deployment and at home.
The film marks a directorial debut for Lysa Heslov, who has a knack for balancing the heavy subject with humor and endearing anecdotes.
