Movie Info

This Hong Kong film is based on a work of erotic literature written in 17th-century China. The story revolves around the escapades of a young man who is inspired by a debate with a Buddhist monk about sexual mores. The man comes to the conclusion that he should seduce as many women as possible and sets out to do just that. In his absence, the man's new wife is brought to live at a brothel and is taught the skills of a concubine, and husband and wife find themselves reunited under surprising circumstances. Despite the film's somewhat exploitative nature, this feature drew a great amount of attention from American critics as well as cult-film audiences.

Audience Reviews for Sex and Zen

This was one of those Hong Kong films that I've always heard about but never got around to tracking down, and I'm happy to cross it off my Movie Shame list. It's got some truly bizarro moments that have to be seen to be believed, including a horse penis transplant to give a guy a larger member, so...y'know, THAT happened. Well worth a look, give it a rental.

Director Michael Mak effortlessly translates all the zany dexterity of Golden Harvest's martial arts output into this big budget remake of "Yu Pui Tsuen II" (1987) that offers a lot of sex but only a little Zen. Both films are based on a notorious 17th century erotic novel The Carnal Prayer Mat [supposedly] penned by well received author, playwright, actor, producer, and director Li Yu. While its praise is often times a tad unwarranted for such a tawdry piece of cinema "Sex and Zen," nevertheless, is noteworthy for being an adult comedy that is both titillating and amusing if nothing else.

Watched it finally... 18 years later. Quite funny, in a way; but rather boring indeed. Nevertheless, still surpasses the 3D version made in 2011.
