The main problem with the film is in the casting of its stars.
Sitcom leftovers are artlessly reheated in this repetitive and exaggerated romantic comedy-drama about a newlywed couple.
This is a film that would have worked wonderfully as episodic television. In small doses the foibles of this marriage would be enjoyable. Unfortunately, in large portions it is more than a little tedious.
The film belongs to Farhan who stuns you with his straight-faced witticisms and plethora of expressions that amuse and move dramatically.
There's no catchy music, there's very little to hold your interest in terms of story and/or creative concept. There is some meaty dialogue though. And that helps supporting actors like Ram Kapoor, Ila Arun and Vir Das help bring home the bacon.
The idea is designed to make us derive gleeful parallels from the film's awkwardness, reveling in the lighter side of marital discord. Ironically, it is their authenticity as a couple that makes it impossible to shrug off a fatal bout of bizarre writing.
Shaadi Ke Side Effects redeems itself as we go along.
The screenplay lurches randomly, eventually leading to a climax so convoluted and false that much of the affection I had for Sid and Trisha evaporated. Which is such a shame because until then, I was having so much fun.
Every joke seems effortless, every quarrel believable and it's only [Farhan Akhtar and Vidya Balan's] sparkling chemistry that saves this film from becoming another unrealistic, happy-ever-after Bollywood flick.
What initially begins as an appealing and rootable pair of characters, both individually and together, devolves into two rather selfish people who perhaps deserve each other for the wrong reasons.
