Why has this film faded into semi obscurity? It's great.
First of all, Burt Reynolds is one of the best action heroes ever. Forget your physical specimens of the 80s to present, Burty has the build of a normal dude, he gets tired, hung over, physically overtaken, but he's clever as hell. It's seeing him struggle through action sequences that makes them so exciting in this flick. Not to mention he's his smarmy self, and bit of a womanizer at that, but I mean, it was the 70s. Think of him as a bubbling Shaft, but less so than Elliott Gould's Marlowe in the Long Goodbye.
Added to all this you have an intriguing story, and some strange, yet amusing characters and situations. Not to forget a great and appropriate score from Jerry Goldsmith.
Almost needless to say: this one stands out.

Entertaining 1970s action thriller starring Burt Reynolds as Shamus McCoy and the lovely Dyan Cannon as the girl. Burt is a detective investigating a strange diamonds heist. He is in top form while on the case, getting into brawls and charming the ladies. The stunts and spectacles are big-budget and top-notch. Fans of action will certainly be taken away by Burt's performance as an early 1970s smooth toughie and can only ponder what would have happen had he been the lead in 'Diamonds are Forever' in 1971 or 'Live and Let Die' in 1973... Nonetheless, a great piece of 1970s action cinema, not high-brow stuff, but certainly a good time.

Burt as P.I. hired to uncover diamond theft who eventually must take matters into his own hands. Morris the Cat makes seamless transition from commercials to big screen, always complementing but never stealing scenes from Reynolds.

Burt is New York private eye Shamus McCoy who's hired to investigate some stolen diamonds but it turns out more than what he initially anticipated. Not one of Reynolds' better films but solid enough time killer

cool little "gumshoe" caper that fans of old school BURT and 70's cinema should dig. Some people might find this flick alittle "by the numbers" and maybe it is but come on - it's 70's BURT!! I enjoyed this movie and to hell with the internet critics that shitcanned it. One notable bitch - there were 3 women i wanted to see naked in this but no dice. Make sure to look for Burt falling from a tree lol - damn that looked PAINFUL!! BURT IS THE MAN!!

Burt Reynolds gives every single stunt 110%. Every leap, every dive, every punch. Good stuff, with a particularly nasty stunt-gone-wrong towards the end of the film.

His name is Shamus McCoy. He sleeps on a pool table. He's a classic 1970s badass P.I., and if you mess with him, "he'll blow your head off." I must see this movie!
