Saved by Pierce Brosnan and it's clever twisted ending

A fun little thriller with enough twists to keep you guessing until the very end.

a smart taut of a thriller
Pierce Brosnan is a bad guy holding a couple's daughter hostage and has them do his bidding
it's rather tense, thrillful, and quite perplexing in the direction it goes
the final reveal is something of a convention but it ties everything in coils
the other reveal is something of a spine-chiller totally twisting everything around
it's creepy once the credits roll showing what happens when a family such as this reaches its breaking point face with despair, abandonment, and fear
Pierce, Maria Bello, and Gerard Butler make an extravagant lineup

Pierce Brosnan joined the film's cast in late 2005. Maria Bello and Gerard Butler joined production on 19 January 2006.

Filming began in February 2006 and finished the following May. Vancouver stands in for Chicago but the production shot in the latter city for landscapes before moving to the United Kingdom for post-production. Filming also took place in Los Angeles.

The 2010 Indian Malayalam film Cocktail is an uncredited remake of Butterfly on a Wheel.

The 2014 Indian Tamil film Athithi is also an uncredited remake of Butterfly on a Wheel

The film's title is an allusion to a line of Alexander Pope's poem "Epistle to Dr Arbuthnot": "Who breaks a butterfly upon a wheel?" The line is usually interpreted as questioning why someone would put great effort into achieving something minor or unimportant, or who would punish a minor offender with a disproportional punishment.

A nice thriller with Pierce Brosnan in a different role then what he usually plays. Some twists and a well made movie made it well worth seeing and i love this kind of movies.

Too Dark for me. Decent enough with a clever twist, just not particularly believable.

This was a pretty good suspense thriller, getting better as the story moved along and containing a hell of a twist at the end. Didn't see that coming. Butler is (nice to look at) and does a good job as a happy family man placed in a desperate situation, when a calculating sociopath (played brilliantly by Pierce Brosnan) kidnaps his young daughter and toys with his wife. At first the kidnappers demands seem standard (money) but they grow increasingly outlandish as the movie progresses until it becomes obvious that he simply enjoys the power that comes along with systematically dismantling their idyllic lives. The viewer is left wondering why until the very end. Enjoyed Brosnan in this role as the bad guy and loved that he kept his Irish accent. Butler has a couple of very emotional scenes that impressed me too. Filmed in Vancouver as Chicago. 9/2/14

Despite its deficiencies, Shattered is actually a pretty entertaining film. It boasts a great cast and it's always nice to see Pierce Brosnan in anything, especially as a villain. Certain sections are way too over the top and can tip to just plain cheesy but the story is fast-paced and there several twists, a few that are good and a few that are predictable. Basically, this is a good movie to check out and it is a fun ride where not too much thought is involved. Even though this didn't get a wide release there is a lot worse stuff released these days than this thriller. Overall, I recommend renting it but not to expect too much from a rather elementary script. Maria Bello looks gorgeous as always if you need extra motivation and she can actually act to go along with her beauty.

This is an ok thriller that keeps your heart beating fast throughout. Apart from the untimely cuts and editing, the best part of this film is Pierce Brosnan, with the rest of the cast kind of falling short. The story is well written but the ending did feel out of place with the rest of the movie. Overall, it's uniquely directed but not too memorable.
