Insanely undercuts exactly the characters we're most curious about, [and] scrupulously avoids the questions that are most pressing within the material.

Like its subject, the movie is self-important yet insipid.

Next to the subsequent Jayson Blair debacle at The New York Times, the Glass affair is about as scandalous as a condom found in the parking lot at a National Youth Christian Leadership Conference.

A film that strikes me as too slick and self-satisfied by half, like its preppie, suck-up hero.

A study in moviemaking that doesn't resonate beyond its subject matter.

Lacks the journalistic killer instinct that could have elevated it above the well-executed but slightly sanctimonious, made-for-TV feel

Jack Safer wrote, after Glass was busted in '98, "If there's any moral to be taken from this story, it should be 'No more excuses.'" After seeing 1700 of them here, I agree.

A fascinating story, with enough dramaturgical potential to make a rock take notice. Unfortunately, Shattered Glass is an ignorant rock unto itself.

Shattered Glass provides a fascinating look behind the scenes at The New Republic ... Yet, viewers may also recoil from the movie's reverential and elitist treatment of The New Republic and other news operations.

What are we to learn from this? Not the broad lesson that every line of work has its share of charlatans: The script is way too pious to swallow such a generic pill. And not anything important about Glass, since there's no real character examination.

The movie is smart about journalism because it is smart about offices.

Shattered Glass may be light when it comes to psychological questions, but its detailed accounting of Glass' actions makes for fascinating viewing.

I'm heartened that someone still has enough faith in the fourth estate to imagine this tawdry saga as an old-fashioned morality play in which the good guys come up tops.
