Shrek the Third

Critics Consensus

Shrek the Third has pop culture potshots galore, but at the expense of the heart, charm, and wit that made the first two Shreks classics.

Movie Info

When Shrek married Fiona, the last thing he had in mind was becoming the next King. But when Shrek's father-in-law, King Harold, suddenly croaks, that is exactly what he faces. Unless Shrek (with the help of his trusted companions Donkey and Puss In Boots) can find a suitable King for Far Far Away, the ogre could be stuck with the job. The most promising candidate, Fiona's cousin Artie, an underachieving Medieval high school slacker, proves to be more of a challenge than they bargained for.

While it may be harmless overall, Shrek The Third lacks the charm, cleverness and the biting of satire of the previous films and feel stale. There is a stunning lack of care put into the film, despite the strong visuals.

Gee, we all thought it would've stopped at Shrek 2, but we're all wrong.

Merlin was the best addition to this movie. The story was a little boring at times. Kid's are sure to enjoy it though, fun for the whole family.

Appallingly bad, Shrek the Third is a trite and cliched mess that wrecks the series. Rather than delivering its usual witty satire, the story plays out like a cheesy sitcom; with Shrek fretting about his ability to be a father while he tries to find a new heir to assume the throne of Far, Far Away so that he can avoid the responsibility. The characters too have fallen into stereotypes and no longer have any charm to them; except for Donkey and Puss In Boots, who continue to be a fun comedy duo. And the animation is especially lackluster, easily the worst of all the films, looking especially clay-like with ridged movement. Poorly made and unoriginal, Shrek the Third is a truly disappointing sequel to a once great series.
