The film is moody and intimately immersive one moment, brutal shocking and horrifying in the next, managing to deliver high-octane action entertainment with both a conscience, and a heart.

The action is riveting-even if the heroine-cop played by Emily Blunt seems unfairly outstripped by Benicio Del Toro.

Sicario is often a hard watch and intentionally uncomfortable in a way that is forgivable thanks to the reality of its subject. It is not a "taut action thriller" as has been touted, so much as it is a "bleak tragic thriller" worth crossing borders for.

As technically assured as all of this is, including one of the tensest scores to feature in a genre picture in recent memory (courtesy of Johann Johannsson), Sicario feels too hollow.

A gritty, uncompromising film of real, raw power that offers one of the clearest and most complex cinematic takes on America's war on drugs we've seen yet.

Although some of the disturbing images are hard to swallow at times, Sicario is a drug thriller you won't want to miss seeing.

Not merely an engrossing drama. Not merely a challenging thriller. One of the best movies of the year.

Blunt is amazing in this movie.

beneath the thrills and the visual artistry, the film refuses to pull back from asking hard questions about our willingness to accept that our home is corrupted, that we are indeed a land of wolves.

It's a film with a first rate cast, pinpoint direction from Denis Villeneuve, and masterful storytelling by writer Taylor Sheridan. It's one of 2015's best movies.

Repeat viewings are likely to prove as addictive as the drugs that are being exported.

It's a thoroughly rough experience, but never so much that it becomes melancholic, and its brutal impact and style makes the anxiety-ridden ride more than worth it.

I was really engaged with the story. I didn't even need the bigger action pieces...Emily Blunt is an absolute movie star, but this is Benicio del Toro's movie.

The story between the action fell a little bit flat for me, but the action sequences, all those, I was shoveling popcorn into my mouth, I couldn't wait to see what happened next.

Sicario is a different sort of action film; one that both raises the body count and asks the audience to keep thinking throughout the film.
April 30, 2018
A nasty film about the drug war on the US-Mexico border that flirts with fascism and artiness, succumbing to the former.
February 15, 2018
The film chips away at a real problem but misses the big picture by a mile.
