You definitely get that feeling of 'in-the-now'...these are current topics right here.

Day of the Soldado pales in comparison to its predecessor, but it is still better than most of the other action movies being made these days.

Director Stefano Sollima serves up a fine, edgy piece of action for the summer. It's just that I'd hoped for more.

The high-intensity action sequences are still present, but they don't carry the same gravity; instead, they feel like shootouts for the sake of incorporating a gunfight.

"Sicario: Day of the Soldado" isn't a bad action movie, it just isn't even in the same league as the first one, so it feels like a disappointment.

It's a fictional look at all-too-real events.

Del Toro is a shining light. When the picture works, it is purely his.

By itself [the film] is a harmless action thriller, which has... a couple of interesting ideas and good characters here and there. [Full review in Spanish]

suggests just how blurry the lines are between right and wrong, lawful and criminal, just and unjust

It's not as strong as its 2015 predecessor but Sicario: Day of the Soldado still features some great pieces that will leave you on the edge of your seat.

This Sicario may have more talking points than it can comfortably hold. It's often confusing, and its political irony is thick enough to slow the story down in spots. But it'll make you squirm.

The fit is not perfect and feels too convenient, but to director Sollima's credit, their psychological shifts are believable, if not completely understandable.

Everything - fiction and reality - still seems to be taken from a post-apocalyptic scenario, more typical of a videogame than of a newscast. [Full review in Spanish]

Del Toro and Brolin are both terrific, as expected, although neither character has much of a connection with the audience.

Sicario: Day of the Soldado, is very entertaining, a film that will appeal to both young and old and leave a good taste, for my taste is not up to the first, but it is not as if its quality has dropped a lot. [Full Review in Spanish]

While it wouldn't be fair to advise potential viewers to just say no to Sicario: Day of the Soldado, it would be acceptable to recommend that they approach it with lofty expectations held in check.

Brolin and Del Toro thrill, and the topic could not be timelier.

It's impossible not to recognize how commanding both Brolin and del Toro are on screen.
July 6, 2018
Although it is a sequel to a film that didn't need one (and suffers by comparison), Sicario: Day of the Soldado is a perfectly serviceable action thriller with bravura performances by Brolin and Del Toro.

It may be missing half the creative team behind the original Sicario but this equally gripping follow-up maintains the quality of its predecessor as well as the brutal efficiency.
