If there is a theme in this film, I would venture to guess that it's right there in the title. The soldier, el soldado, has his day and his way throughout.

Benicio Del Toro soars, giving an outstanding performance with the same intensity as his Oscar-winning performance in Traffic (2000) although confusing & thin script.

Last 7 minutes is cluttered with the results of good intentions or more likely the foundation of a future good movie.

What we have is a sequel that's enjoyable enough, but in the end it's a sequel that didn't need to happen nor do I think it's a sequel that was planned to happen.

With shootout after shootout, the second Sicario film feels like it's not really going in any particular direction.

The problem is that this is a Sicario that wants to be a Logan.

Every plot point is straight off the Fox News conspiracy reel.

The second upholds the franchise's tradition of a wild, confusing celebration of brute force and violence within the context of the war on drugs, with a touch of terrorism.

June 29, 2018
That's what's so disheartening: the movie dramatizes a peculiarly American, specifically 21st-century form of political violence-and flubs the politics.

You never get sucked into its frames in the same way Villeneuve and Deakins lured you in two years ago. That's the problem with "Soldado": There's no escaping the fact that they already got it right the first time around.

Every moment of Sicario: Day of the Soldado is soaked in an unilluminating and easy cynicism.

Everything is broadly orchestrated without anything close to the shocking surprises Kate confronted three years ago.

In some ways, Day of the Soldado is darker than Sicario, but it's darkness without purpose.

And that's ultimately why Sicario: Day of the Soldado isn't as successful as the first film: it's trying to make action heroes out of characters whose sole purpose was meant to illustrate the evil required to battle evil.

Day of the Soldado de-fangs the previous film's critiques, softening its monsters into begrudgingly necessary tools for justice.
