Silver Linings Playbook (2012)

Critic Consensus: Silver Linings Playbook walks a tricky thematic tightrope, but David O. Russell's sensitive direction and some sharp work from a talented cast gives it true balance.

Movie Info

Life doesn't always go according to plan. Pat Solatano (Bradley Cooper) has lost everything -- his house, his job, and his wife. He now finds himself living back with his mother (Jacki Weaver) and father (Robert DeNiro) after spending eight months is a state institution on a plea bargain. Pat is determined to rebuild his life, remain positive and reunite with his wife, despite the challenging circumstances of their separation. All Pat's parents want is for him to get back on his feet-and to share their family's obsession with the Philadelphia Eagles football team. When Pat meets Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence), a mysterious girl with problems of her own, things get complicated. Tiffany offers to help Pat reconnect with his wife, but only if he'll do something very important for her in return. As their deal plays out, an unexpected bond begins to form between them, and silver linings appear in both of their lives. -- (C) Weinstein

Writer-director Russell is just the guy to bring out (and then calm) the manic dysfunction in these folks.

It's a rom-com that succeeds in revitalizing that discredited genre where so many others have failed, injecting it with the grit and emotion of realist drama rather than with amped-up whimsy or social satire or montages of people walking on the beach.

Silver Linings Playbook tells us that happily-ever-after may depend on finding people who coexist with our lunacy, not ones who can lead us out of it. In any case, it's crazy good.

A crazy beaut of a comedy that brims with generosity and manages to circumvent predictability at every turn.

This meaningful film keeps the laughs, giddy anxiousness and warm butterflies from the trailer and sustains it all through two full hours of a love story.

Audience Reviews for Silver Linings Playbook

The feel-good movie of the year, so refreshing, captivating and openly anti-pessimistic, and it is not only well written and directed but works even better thanks to its great ensemble cast - especially Cooper and Lawrence, who have an amazing chemistry together.

I found 'Linings' an interesting movie with pros and cons. Pros: Dealing with mental illness - and hope for the future; interesting to see Lawrence in a role so different than Hunger Games. Cons: When I read the various comments and history of the film, it was nominated for so many Academy Awards? Really? Didn't seem that special.

Not gonna lie, my expectations for this film were not particularly high, despite of the numerous awards it received. But, boy, is this a fun ride. That's mostly thanks to the hilarious writing and outstanding acting. Especially Lawrence and Cooper fill their roles with so much life you can't help but fall for the mentally ill couple. I never would have thought a film about football, depression and dancing could be this engaging and easy-going, despite of the serious undertones. How Russell manages to turn that into a romantic comedy without the audience even noticing is a little wonder. A highly entertaining one.
