Sloane: A Jazz Singer follows unsung jazz legend Carol Sloane as she prepares for one final live recording at New York's famed Birdland. Despite a quick rise to stardom in the early 1960s, and a six decade career that found her being hailed by peers and critics alike as one of the greatest vocal interpreters of The Great American Songbook, the now 82 year-old is still mostly unknown to the public at large, and has never received one dime in royalties for the thirty-plus albums she's produced. After years of personal and professional setbacks, she's nonetheless still pursuing an artistic passion that struck her as a young girl listening to late night radio broadcasts, and she is determined to keep its legacy alive, for however long she has left to do it. In the days leading up to her legacy performance, Carol offers a collage of memories while recounting the highs and lows of her rich but turbulent career involving everyone from Ella Fitzgerald and Oscar Peterson to The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. Enlightening personal commentaries are shared by industry notables including multi-Grammy winning editor/writer Dan Morgenstern, Grammy-winning singer Catherine Russell, Emmy-winning composer and musician Mike Renzi, Grammy-winning pianist Bill Charlap, Duke University Vice-Provost for the Arts John Brown, Emmy-winning recording engineer Joel Moss, and others. "Sloane: A Jazz Singer," the story of the imperfect perfectionist, is a heart-wrenching, yet hopeful story of faithful adherence to one’s craft, in the face of the many struggles that come her way.

She shares her memories as she goes about her day to day life and her musical work, so the two narratives weave together very smoothly, making for a story which would be naturally engaging even if it didn’t have such an interesting focus. Go to Full Review
