Movie Info

Someday This Pain Will Be Useful to You is a heart warming, funny and passionate portrait of a confused New York teenager, James Sveck, played by up-and-coming star Toby Regbo, and his loving, eccentric and dysfunctional family. James's staunch non-conformism leads him to teenage mistakes that are hard to undo. He refuses to go to college, after being accepted at Brown, and is interested in nothing - barring visits to his enigmatic, free-spirited grandmother Nanette, played by Oscar winner Ellen Burstyn, the only one who seems to understand just how lost a restless 17-year-old can feel while trying to find himself in a confusing world. -- (C) Official Site

This cliche-ridden coming of age story is as painfully awkward as its troubled teen protagonist.

His pain may be useful to James someday, but to viewers, it's annoying right here and now.

These 2-D characters might as well be wearing T-shirts that say things like "Predatory College Professor" and "Self-Obsessed Father" on them.

The film is a pleasant watch, filled with nice little moments of comedy and tenderness, and optimistic about the fate of dreamers who happen to be a little slow out of the starting gate.

Audience Reviews for Someday This Pain Will Be Useful to You

I really liked this movie because it is the story of a young introvert dealing with the chaotic energy of society and family.

Life and love through the eyes of a hyper intellect young man. Very funny and witty. It is directed by the Italian Roberto Faezan. With a distinct non-American feel to the story line, this movie is not well received but I like it very much. I see the doings of other in the eyes of James, critical of others' "silliness" and "shallowness". Mother being a arty New Age sentimentalist, father being a shallow capitalist with common vanity, and "Mr. Roger" being all folksy earnest regret -- all reasonable courses for being critical. But our young man, played by the epicene Toby Regbo, learned his lesson of how to love others in the terms of their own world.

While the film lacks in depth and originality, it still delivers with heart and some fine acting by Burstyn and Harden. Toby Regbo brings depth and soul to his character and carries this film. Hope this young man will find future roles suited to his potential.
