Honestly, if this movie had come out 10 years later, and been about AIDS rather than syphilis the seriousness with which it takes its subject might have been merited. The reality of a disease that is easily treatable in early stages simply doesn't require the emotional intensity this movie brings with it, and it's hard to suspend disbelief as a result. From the opening scene, where a public health worker actually tracks down one infected person throughout the movie, it almost like we're seeing missing scenes from And the Band Played On, without any of the earth shaking drama and tragedy of a deadly and unexplainable pandemic.
