In what could only be a dead-of-winter miracle in the Upside Down, I just saw an inspired-by a video game movie that wasn't absolutely terrible.

Given its nightmarish production, it's somewhat miraculous that Sonic is as fun and lively as it is, if only moderately so on both fronts.

The world contains many terrible video game movies. This isn't one of them.

The simple storyline finds a way to adapt the games' characters and themes, by adding universal concepts such as friendship to the original games' tension between nature and machines.

Seeing Jim Carrey back in action made me realize that I didn't really miss him.

Sonic the Hedgehog manages to delightfully impress with some truly entertaining action sequences, and contains yet another wildly fun Jim Carrey performance.

The satisfyingly high-speed velocity gameplay for which Sonic is so beloved is translated into cringey floss dances, fourth-wall breaking jokes, and pathetic attempts to appear earnest despite constant snark in the screenwriting.
February 21, 2020
Though better and more winning than what might have been expected, Sonic's a little too unwitting to outrun its own self.
February 20, 2020
Mildly corny humor directed at kids, but the overall saving grace is Jim Carrey as the wildly weird Dr. Robotnik.

A secondary plotline about a kindly local policeman and some imaginative additions to the tearaway title character's (admittedly sketchy) back story keeps Sonic the Hedgehog moving at speed towards a pleasing destination.
