Movie Info

The true story of baseball's early days of racial integration is told in this made-for-cable movie. Blair Underwood stars as the young Jackie Robinson, who surprised everyone -- both the white sporting fans and his fellow Negro-league players --- and became the first African-American baseball player to reach the major leagues. Co-star Delroy Lindo, Underwood, and the film itself were all nominated for Image Awards.more

Akin to a bloop single: it's not pretty but it gets the job done, even if only for a little bit.

Audience Reviews for Soul of the Game

Perfectly acted film that explores the potential candidates to break The Color Line in Major League Baseball. Of course, we know it will be Jackie Robinson (Blair Underwood) that Branch Rickey (Edward Herrmann) will handpick. The rivalry and friendship shared between Robinson, Satchel Paige (Delroy Lindo), and Josh Gibson (Mikelti Williamson) are what really moves this historical drama. Even a non-baseball fan should be entertained by this HBO production.

Jackie Robinson: Don't you want someone strong enough to fight back?
Branch Rickey: I want someone strong enough not too.
