Movie Info

Few sculptors throughout history have succeeded as triumphantly as Alan Thornhill in devising a new technique that virtually redefined the process behind the medium. More specifically, Thornhill sought to integrate raw, spontaneous improvisation (not a quality one typically associates with sculpture) into his art, meanwhile retaining the elegance and sensuality of traditional sculpture. His innovations proved so influential that they inspired successive generations of students and enabled those pupils to communicate, with astonishing clarity, their feelings about various events of the late 20th century. With the documentary Spirit in Mass: Journey into Sculpture, director Anna Thornhill (Alan's daughter) hones in exclusively on her dad for a critical observation of the artist and his work, and of the journey he undertook as he embarked into the arena of sculpture.
