like a combination of 'The Wizard of Oz' and 'Alice in Wonderland' retold by a clever storyteller who incorporates his own details, twists and bits of humor into the plot.

It's a wonderful example of traditional Japanese anime, and a flat-out terrific film.

Repeatedly reminded me of the later Oz books, with Chihiro's Dorothyesque role in a surreal and perilous fantasy land.

It's the sort of film that gives rise to the awed question, 'How did he do that?'

A wierd and fulfilling fantasy, chalk full of inspired transporting imagery, crucial to the success of animated films but in short supply of late.

A rich and fantastic world awaits us in this extraordinary film from Hayao Miyazaki (and a crew of thousands), through which our little heroine has to progress and learn responsibility amidst great dangers and fearsome spirits.

We are thrust into a kaleidoscopic wonderland for more than two hours, quite long for an animated film. There's enough adventure and jeopardy in this film to fill five films of this nature.

It's a bloody shame that the anime film with the strongest theatrical push I can remember has to be this one.

Miyazaki's nonstop images are so stunning, and his imagination so vivid, that the only possible complaint you could have about Spirited Away is that there is no rest period, no timeout.

Filled with haunting imagery, subtly rendered characters and an emotional core absent from most anime, Spirited Away is a rich cinematic experience, a story that reads like direct translation of the director's dream...
