Weird, Silly & Exceptionally Entertaining Tobe Hooper Flick, With Its Interesting Plot & Good Direction
March 21, 2013
Finally saw this and it isn't the crappiest movie that the internet critics would lead one to think. Brad Dourif has a borderline performance where you cant tell if he is acting legit or if he is treading ham territory but he is interesting and intense in his trademarked ways. Hooper's effects are almost a cross between Poltergeist and Lifeforce but on a weaker level. Some of the fire effects do work. The story is kind of interesting but it just doesn't have an effective villain or supporting characters. Still there is some drive-in, late night sleaze that slightly elevates this over a bad horror/thriller movie from the late 80's early 90's.

A rarely seen conspiracy horror fantasy thriller B movie directed by Tobe Hooper, in some ways, it was his last decent picture until "The Toolbox Murders" remake. The movies does have an unique premise, Hooper was probably inspired by the book or the movie "Firestarter". But it is Brad Dourif's intense performance makes this strange, sometimes odd film highly watchable. You know, when you watch a "Tobe Hooper" movie, it is more style than subtance and Hooper has a bizarre style (and outragerous sense of humour) to his movies are not always coherent. Most of the story makes sense in this one but the film needed an stronger conclusion, however. I do like Dourif's performance in this, playing normal guy (Which it is rare for him) until his discover his true identity and his power. Watch for director Hooper in a quick cameo and John Landis in a funny cameo. But it is certainly different from Hooper's style, although it does have his oddities. Maybe because this one has more of a story, especially early on. Well made, forgotten B movie. Don't miss it.

I liked it better the first time I saw it.

Truly terrible acting and a fairly dreadful plot combine to make a fairly average movie that you cannot help but enjoy. Whether it's a syringe full if bright green fluid, or black sludge seeping from a woman's eyes, Spontaneous Combustion has it all. Stupid, but enjoyable.

A facintaing idea for a horror film but it falls flat due to a poor script. Don't get me wrong its pretty damm enetertaing but god the scripiting is below average. The plot revoles around two nuclear test subject in a top secret 1950's nuclear experiment burning to death after sopontaneouisly combusting wicth orphans thier son david/sam. Then in the 80's we see sam starting to set fire to anyone inculding a cameo of director John Landies as a radio technice. The rest of the film is pretty sraghit forward but the only thing going for it is Brad Dourf's preformace of sam, Tobe Hoopers Dierction, and the SFX with tonnes of fire stunts. Otherwise its got one bad script.

This is a bargain bin horror film but rather enjoyable none the less. Its certainly not Hooper's best but defiantly not his worst work. Brad Dourif really makes and very much carries the whole thing. His performance is amazing. He is only let down by the supporting cast who are abysmal. There is a somewhat amusing cameo appearance by John Landis to look out for. I?ve seen a lot worse.

There was a good idea at the core here but it seems like they ran out of money or time to develop it properly. Rare good guy role for Brad Dourif is a nice change of pace.

Watchable, though not spectacular. Dourif, when in shouting fits, just screams 'chucky' throughout. Still it aint bad.

there's a widely circulated idea that steven spielberg actually directed poltergeist, and that the texas chainsaw massacre was a fluke. spontaneous combustion is good evidence in support for that idea. exhaustively boring and poorly directed film about a man who is a firestarter (just like in that stephen king movie, what was it called again...). even brad dourif, who usually rules, can't save this dud. there is a redeeming scene though, when brad burns director john landis through a telephone land line...

If all the pauses and scenes of people talking on the phone and moments of people just walking or driving somewhere while nothing particularly interesting was going on were edited out, you would have a fun and sadistic little short film on your hands of people simply bursting into flames.

I like to watch this film as if it were the origin story to a super hero comic. Brad Dourif is FIRE-MAN or somethin'. Dourif, by the by, supplies a kick ass performance. VF.
