It's a Restoration romantic comedy that struggles with the romance and isn't nearly comic enough.

Those who are looking for a love story along the lines of Shakespeare in Love may be disappointed -- Stage Beauty is neither as romantic nor as endearing.

It just keeps meandering and meandering.

Goes off in about a million directions, fails to find its tone and undercuts fine work done by its actors.

Danes, as usual, overplays her character's every emotion.

An odd, stilted production that is nearly too contemporary in its flippant sentiments for its own good.

Stage Beauty, despite many merits, seems to reach the harmful conclusion that sex with Claire Danes will cure homosexuality.

At its worst, the film prioritizes its own seriousness (which it never achieves anyway) over any form of audience appeal (which is the best this material can aspire to).

As played by Crudup with a high-pitched, faltering voice, [Ned] Kynaston's actual gender is never in question.

It should be an enthralling tale, but too many story elements just don't jive.

A 17th century Star is Born, though with interestingly convoluted sexual politics and a provocative historical thesis.

Those who repeddle success would be wise to make the copy at least as good (if not better) than the original. Otherwise, they're merely setting themselves up for daunting comparison.

The worst problem with the movie is its inability to rise above the muddle of ideas with which it toys.

The result plays like a theater person's idea of serious cinema.

Kudos for at least working Claire Danes' glaringly limited abilities into the storyline. Now if they could only do something about the sophomoric script and nasty mysogyny...
October 4, 2004
The plot is entirely implausible, the end anachronistic and, even worse, positively offensive.

Bypasses its provocative potential to follow the well-trod path of 'Tootsie' and 'Mrs. Doubtfire': being a 'woman' is just another way for a man to become a better man.
