  • It doesn't do anything new or even terribly distinctive, but maybe it didn't have to. It just had to be good enough to stick the landing, and it does that.

  • You sense in this film, J.J. [Abrams] shrinking that world... Everything in this franchise feels like a take back.

  • The Rise of Skywalker entertains, it elicits laughters, and it makes you feel even as you snicker at some predictably basic and occasionally nonsensical story decisions.

  • If you disliked "The Last Jedi" (like I did), you'll like - but probably not love - "The Rise of Skywalker." If you liked "The Last Jedi," this review might not be for you.

  • When we meet up with brash pilot Poe, he's lightspeed-skipping his way out of trouble, and Abrams is in much the same mode, whisking you from one thing to the next before you have much time to think or feel anything in response.

  • The hermetic logic of the plot is as impeccable as it is ridiculous. It's a drama crafted with robotic insularity for the consumption of viewers being rendered robotic at each moment of the soullessly uniform spectacle.

Audience Reviews for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

Messy conclusion. This feels like a remake of Return of the Jedi. Safe filmmaking, with zero gambles. The first hour is tough, really tough to sit through. We're suppose to swallow a villain has been alive this whole time without any explanation. Things do ramp up towards the end, but Abrams and Disney have really nailed the coffin shut here. Uninspired and meaningless film, and it's a shame. The storyline is tedious and a stepping stone for the so called fanboy groups that called The Last Jedi a mess. This is a real mess. It's a shame Rian Johnson didn't write and direct this trilogy. This film has forced story beats, nothing flows. It's all for fan service, essentially box office glorification, Lucas never did this. Where's the risks? Disappointing conclusion after the great work done in The Last Jedi. What happened to the spark to ignite the rebels? What happened to the child at the end of the last film? Too many holes, and characters left to the side. Finn is here for no real reason. I wasn't a giant fan of the remake of Last Hope by Abrams, but at least it had some originality with set pieces. Disney's influence was obviously too much here. 20/12/2019

Best of the Last three with thrills, laughs and melancholy, the acting is very good especially Ridley and Driver. Gave me the nostalgia of the original trilogy which was during my childhood. A fitting way to end the current story! 12-27-2019

An apparently controversial ending to the Skywalker saga, I'm curious how this film will age. Afterall, we forget but Return of the Jedi was not well liked when it first came out. In any case, what did I think? Honestly, I really liked it. Yes, I've heard the criticism about the cleanup of The Last Jedi and the fetch quest stuff and "that" kiss and while I do agree that these are problems, they never ruined the movie for me. Honestly some of the things that ruined the movie for other people I kinda' liked. The idea that the Emperor has been in the shadows and has even created some of the villains of the previous movies I actually really dug. Partly just because it's great to see Ian McDiarmid back on screen, but also having an overarching villain for all 9 movies I kinda' like. I like the banter of the characters. Some people say they argue, but honestly I think this is just how friends talk in tense situations and having been with friends in tense situations it felt familiar. And then there's the action, holy crap, this is some of the best Star Wars action I've ever seen. During the final confrontation there was honestly a point where I was whispering to myself "go, go!" for a character to get to a place, and even though I knew from a narrative standpoint of course they would get there, I still felt uncertain. I was never bored by the movie, in its action or in its character moments. The character turns we get feel strong and natural, and at times even moving. In the end it's not a perfect end because I don't think this whole thing was mapped out as well as it could have been. But as it is, honestly, I actually loved it.

This is some bullshit. You know it, I know it. Rise of Skywalker is not just a bad movie contained within itself, it's also a very bad sequel to Last Jedi. But that didn't stop me from having a really great time at the cinema with Episode IX. Twice. Originally I started writing my review for it by writing two lists, one of all the dumb crap I didn't like, and one of all the dumb crap I did like, but A) it contained a lot of spoilers, and B) there's a lot of lists of the dumb crap in Rise of Skywalker out there already, so all I'll say is just this: The majority of complaints that people are making about Rise of Skywalker are fair and accurate, and whether you are a Star Wars fan or not, there is a very real chance you will not enjoy this movie. But between 2017 and 2019 I watched over 1500 movies, and I thought that this movie was one of the better ones.
