There's a lot to like about Starfish, but the choppy editing, the overly arthouse way it presents some of the themes, and underdeveloped aspects of the story in favor of the aural experience is ostracizing. Go to Full Review
Jason Bailey New York Times Jun 20, 2019
If White's wild formal experimentation and narrative cul-de-sacs result in a strange identity crisis for the film - a sense that he wasn't entirely sure which movie he wanted to make - Gardner's stellar work unifies it. Go to Full Review

Not all of those pieces fit together. But they combine into something strikingly original. Go to Full Review

Starfish offers a new look at how humans deal with grief while also making its own mark within the horror genre. Go to Full Review

Sometimes a little too music-video-like, and playfully random...I couldn't relate. Still, many millennial viewers seem to think Starfish is amaaaaaazing. Go to Full Review

An ambitious piece of science fiction that manages to keep afloat despite its attempt to juggle two vastly different storylines. Go to Full Review

Elaine H @RT89452650 Apr 15, 2026 Ugh. Artsy fartsy garbage. Waste of my life. Ending confusing. Stupid See more The J @RT70708650 Mar 21, 2026 Honestly don't get it, it just felt like the most self indulgent, decent into narcissism, with great cinematography. It's like when someone only wants to talk about themselves, their problems, how every mistake they make is not their fault, while simutaneously having no point to anything they do... never are they interested for a second in anything but what they are going through. It's so tiringly self indulgent, someone used to getting way more attention for their looks, than anything valuable they offer others. I don't mind stories of self discovery, or growth, weird little worlds, that are interesting, this felt like none of that. No self-awareness, attempt at growth, etc. Honestly it didn't feel like grief, more like self-pity. Like from the get go, the funeral was just about herself, no concern for anyone else, just herself. The same person wouldn't indulge someone else in the room exactly like themselves, but still expect all the attention/empathy anyway. See more Bruce M @BruceMc Jan 28, 2026 Awfully boring and boringly awful, plays like a student film: muddled, pretentious, terrible soundtrack. Nice cinematography, though. See more A Tough M @RT23358111 Jan 29, 2024 Random images thrown together, no plot, no story, no conclusion. Worst soundtrack in the history of movies. How does this garbage get made????
