The great Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami, who made several documentaries and a larger body of work mixing fiction and non-fiction, passed away last year. After seeing "Starless Dreams," I think the torch has been passed.

There's a danger in coming in to this film in particular expecting a cultural portrait of the country, because with these examples, xenophobic ideas about the brutality of Muslim strangers could easily be reinforced instead of dissolved.
