The action sequences are heavily laden with special effects, but curiously joyless.

Paul Verhoeven is exactly the wrong man to have made Starship Troopers.

I don't think you'll get much bang for your money out of this sophomoric satire.

This flick wallows in just about every moth-ridden cliche known to the film industry and relies almost entirely on naked teenage girls and recycled special effects for what it deems excitement.

Maybe the filmmakers are so lost in their slambang visual effects that they don't give a hoot about the movie's scariest implications.

rship Troopers its moments, and it's certainly not stupid. But there are only so many places the movie can go without tipping its hand, and Verhoeven seems dead set against allowing his film to consciously acknowledge its own subtext.

It's fun and empty but so much less vacuous than Men In Black.

The enjoyment you get from watching Starship Troopers is similar to the pleasure felt from a loud 'ZAP' from a bug zapper. And about as deep.

What galls me is the film's marketing, moral and ideological cynicism.

In the hands of Verhoeven, the mammoth sci-fi battle flick is one of the most astonishingly bad films ever made, a monument to inept filmmaking on a colossal scale.

Not the return to form for Verhoeven many have called it -- in the end, it is just a step in the right direction.

A nonstop splatterfest so devoid of taste and logic that it makes even the most brainless summer blockbusters look intelligent.

If Showgirls represented Verhoeven's bid to become Hollywood's most shameless vulgarian, that sound you hear in Starship Troopers is the other shoe dropping.

Lacking the sophistication of the average comic book, it compensates with panoramic attack sequences, reminiscent of the Japanese swarm attacks in American war movies.

Lacks the courage of the book's fascist conclusions.
