Writer/director Robert Budreau fictionalizes the 1973 six-day Swedish bank robbery that inspired the term "Stockholm Syndrome". Ethan Hawke stars as Lars Nystrom, an American-raised ex-convict who holds the staff of the Kreditbanken hostage while negotiating with the Swedish police. Hawke, in particular, excels in his second collaboration with Budreau, following his tender turn as Chet Baker in Born to Be Blue with a performance that unexpectedly becomes just as deep in the midst of an unabashed popcorn movie.

Budreaunever quite finds an ending, but the vibe he grooves in along the way (much of it provided by the less-remembered, early-'70s Dylan on the soundtrack) is just right.

Take Stockholm as it is: a suspenseful, riotous black comedy interlaced with moments of heartfelt emotion.
