Tucci and company make the film compelling, and although we know where things are headed, the occasional detour here and there makes for an interesting journey.

Submission is a fine film held back by a script full of convenient plot developments and flimsy writing; a cautionary tale for the consequences of men thinking with their junk too much

A seriously considered film brimming with ideas worth examining.

Frustrating but sincere and well acted, especially by Tucci, who embodies a middle-aged man in transition, "Submission" explores well the risk associated with stepping out of one's comfort zone and shaking free from the stranglehold of mediocrity.

Acting is a precise craft but also a mysterious alchemy, and when you've gotten as good as Tucci has, a seamless performance like this can transform a so-so movie into a pleasure.

Tucci and Timlin are both quite good in their roles, and writer-director Richard Levine (adapting Francine Prose's 2000 novel "Blue Angel") does an excellent job of slowly escalating the pair's relationship.

I couldn't help but enjoy much of its tone, as well as the ebb and flow of the performances, even if I was troubled by the enigma of Angela.

Honoring the primacy of language for his characters, Levine deftly reveals the ways they wield it to seduce, attack, manipulate, repress and, occasionally, to communicate.

There's an archness to the film that keeps this from devolving into Lifetime melodrama, and a few twists that keep it erring on the side of intentionally provocative rather than hectoring.

The archly titled Submission is an equal-opportunity panorama of folly, a fictional quagmire to help keep our minds off the real one all around us.
March 2, 2018
Submission is well acted, finely paced and craftily photographed, but provides no real revelations that will add to the discussion about campus politics or sexual harassment. Which is OK - thankfully, it's not a film that wants to teach us a lesson.

It's an age-old fable about the point where desire meets device, and invariably loses.

This is a small, adult film that will have smart specialty audiences thinking. What's wrong with that? It also happens to be highly entertaining.

Levine doesn't always play things subtly, but he does work effectively, creating a small-scale battle of power and credit that feeds into the dual meaning of the title.

If you liked "Oleanna" you'll go for this tale focusing on sexual harassment.

A sexual harassment parable whose obviousness is treated as a "twist." It's the players -- Tucci and Sedgwick especially -- who make it worth your while.

Tucci and Timlin light up the screen and deliver one of the best performances of their careers thus far.

Despite many script problems, Levine has kept the film tightly coiled and engrossing throughout.
