Audience Reviews for Sugar Boxx
Hey Sugar Boxx, your budget is showing - I wanted to like this more than I did, but it's just a little too bargain basement to let me fully commit to it, even as a tribute to the grindhouse aesthetic. Rental? At best?
Trashy but sorta fun throwback to 1970's women in prison (or WIP) films. Geneviere Anderson is the lead (though curiously missing from this cast list??) as hard-nosed Florida TV reporter who will do anything to uncover the truth, which includes getting herself thrown in prison in order to sniff out corruption from the inside at a correctional facility where the inmates are all young women convicted on falsified evidence and coerced into servicing prison patrons at the warden-run brothel. Whew! If you've seen a couple WIP films, you've pretty much seen them all, and it's no surprise that the genre has dried up since its heyday during the '70's and early '80's. I mean, how many times can you rehash the same tired formula? As often as you can find new boobs to display I suppose. That makes this 2009 entry slightly novel for this era but makes no changes whatsoever to the source material. Anderson is actually very good, and her begrudging sidekick Thela Brown is hilarious as a foul-mouthed hooker with a gangsta attitude. Together they make this pulp passable if you're in the right mood.
That'll be $40 A Texas reporter believes there is a corrupt jail wrongfully imprisoning women and treating them inappropriately. She takes steps to get incarcerated to obtain the insight on the prison. It doesn't take long to discover the wrongful deeds taking place and the heinous acts forced upon the women by the warden. "Wash that ass or I'll wash it for you." Cody Jarrett, director of Surfbroads and Frog-g-g, delivers Sugar Boxx. The storyline for this picture is fairly straightforward for the jail house genre; however, the settings and sequences displayed the obvious limited budget. The acting is also limited and includes Linda Dona, Thelma Brown, Geneviere Anderson, and Tura Satana. "The only way to get this story is from the inside out." Sugar Boxx is a film my wife came across while flicking through the channels that reminded her of the old Roger Corman classics. Unfortunately, this was closer to soft porn than the Corman classics. The jail was a series of tents in the woods and most of the characters were fairly cliché. Overall, this is a forgettable low budget film that is not worth your time. "Tits on the hood. Spread them." Grade: D
