A wannabe firefighter nearly destroys his own reputation by joining the force and putting his own brigade in danger, only to get a second shot at redemption after a sudden explosion traps his wife in a sinking ship. Larry Barker is the kind of guy who talks a big game. He sees himself as something of a superman, and he's convinced that he'd make a better firefighter than any current member of the rescue brigade. As luck would have it, Larry's wife Mary is the daughter of local Fire Captain Tim O'Connor. Captain O'Conner doesn't have the highest opinion of Larry, though due to pressure from both his wife and his daughter, he reluctantly hires the boorish braggart anyway. Larry is a maverick who brings the fire department lots of press, though his inability to take orders leaves a fellow firefighter in dire straits during a particularly treacherous call. His reputation effectively ruined, Larry decides to resign from the force rather than taking a six month suspension, and quickly sinks into a deep depression. Later, when Larry and Mary set out to sea aboard a luxurious cruise ship, tragedy strikes when an explosion leaves Mary hopelessly trapped in the sinking vessel. Realizing that this may be his last chance at redemption, Larry vows to rescue his wife by any means necessary.
