The film is sloppy and ill-formed, its tone lurching drunkenly from turgid soap opera to soft-core porn, descending at times to low camp.

The paranoiac aspects of the film and a good and sympathetic performance by Mira Sorvino make this otherwise wandering and pointlessly over-long film considerably more watchable than it would be otherwise.

Lee's just not a good enough filmmaker - and finally, not smart enough - to achieve the grand statements that he's apparently after.

Spike Lee's latest joint, like much of his recent work, is an epic exercise in tedium.

Trouble is, the overlong narrative, however entertaining from minute to minute, is a mess.

Messy and belligerent.

Spike Lee, one of the most consistently visionary American filmmakers, makes a sprawling mess out of the summer of 1977.

Makes you want to go home and shower with some sort of antiseptic cleanser instead of marvel over its artistic merits.

Lee is a great filmmaker, often exhibiting kinetic visual flair on par with Brian DePalma and Martin Scorsese and a storytelling ability comparable to Steven Spielberg. But here, he gets himself into a bind.
