Movie Info

A once-healthy marriage withers on the vine as a middle-aged wife becomes increasingly incapacitated by a deep depression in this slow-paced and very realistic drama. For her portrayal of the wife, Joanne Woodward received an Oscar nomination as did her co-star Sylvia Sidney who was appearing in her first film in seventeen years.

Audience Reviews for Summer Wishes, Winter Dreams

The midlife crisis at the middle of a couples' existence is aided through the stellar turn of Joanne Woodward but the slow pace to the film traps the viewer in amber from which they never achieve gratification.

★★★ (out of four) Joanne Woodward and Sylvia Sidney are fantastic in their Oscar nominated roles. The film itself isn't quite up to the standard they deliver, however. Woodward plays Rita, a materialitsic housewife, married to Harry, an eye doctor (Martin Balsam). Their marriage is dull and they have settled into mid-life limbo. They decide to take a trip to France to visit the harrowing battlefield where Harry fought during World War II. They hope to rekindle some romance. Sidney plays Rita's mother and has an undeniable screen presence, even at her advanced age. The performances rise above the drab material. [IMG][/IMG]
