[A]though the ending of Synchronic is a bit more Hollywood than I'm used to in a Benson and Moorhead film, the duo's signature narrative ingenuity and ability to spin tension seemingly out of thin air have translated fully intact.

The chemistry between Dornan and Mackie is certainly good enough to sustain the buddy element of the film, although Dornan's character rapidly begins to feel somewhat superfluous to the plot as events go on.

mannered SF slyly challenges the politics of conservative nostalgia, as our African-American hero learns that, compared to his country's long history of violent hostility and division, there really is no better time (yet) than the familiar present.

With believability being pushed too far, and the film's direction needing a tighter pace, even the surreal visual effects and trippy weirdness aren't quite enough to make it work.

Synchronic doesn't match the heights of Benson and Moorhead's prior efforts, but it nevertheless offers a creative - if messy - riff on a tired sci-fi subgenre.

It could have done with some more of the same weirdness that made The Endless so fascinating, but it's a fine addition to Benson and Moorhead's filmography.

The filmmakers behind 'Spring' and 'The Endless' tell an affecting tale about the importance of the people in our lives.

Synchronic is the latest crowd pleasing head turner from horror-science fiction filmmakers Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, and it offers up an intimate and slightly grisly spin on the hop backwards this (time travel) sub-genre affords.

It does more than enough in terms of drawing us into these characters and their predicament, and it provides a solid, occasionally gory spectacle for one to sink their teeth into.

This is a fantastic science fiction film, Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead's best, and I can't wait to see what they do next.

Synchronic tells a poignant message about clinging to life and making the most of it. This is a sci-fi film that will twist your mind as it pulls at your heartstrings.

Come for the spectacle, stay for the meditation of our very existence. Synchronic is a stunning piece of science fiction with a heart beating just under the surface.

Synchronic is too imbalanced to be a new genre classic, in need of more reflection from its characters and more risk-taking with its sci-fi elements, but Anthony Mackie is a strong lead.

Often dazzling, with a career-best performance from star Anthony Mackie.

Benson and Moorhead have always opted to let the viewer get to know their protagonists before plunging them into whatever oddity they've devised for the narrative, while leaving a shroud of mystery around the peculiarity itself.
September 17, 2019
Even if Synchronic falls short of some of its ambitions, it contains more than enough to engage the eye and the mind.

Enthralling sci-fi... The style is languid but never draggy, complemented by a dreamy musical score.
September 17, 2019
Synchronic is science fiction thinking about itself.
September 16, 2019
Benson and Moorhead urn their hand to a more mainstream story that still is smarter and more enjoyable than the average, thanks to their particular talents.

As well-versed as [Moorhead and Benson] may be in the sci-fi lexicon, they now need to begin weaving an original vision that takes their knowledge to higher levels, transcending their derivative qualities rather than capitulating to them.
