Recording twenty-four hours in the life of doctors and nurses at a Polish hospital, Kieslowski is able to incorporate an astonishing range of human experience--pain, weakness, caring, comedy, success, failure, and perseverance. That he has boiled this down to twenty minutes makes his effort all the more noteworthy. The doctors come off as largely noble figures working in less than ideal conditions. The comic touches are most refreshing, and give the film greater resonance as a human document.

Kieslowski again produces a "you are there" documentary, this time exploring a hospital over the course of a day. The hospital seems constantly on the brink of chaos... an episode involving a drill that requires a nurse to lean on the plug is pretty amusing. Another scene with a tool that gets stuck while setting a bone is downright horrifying. A fascinating, harrowing and disturbing short film. There's also a tragic irony here considering the details of Kieslowski's early demise.
