This Hong Kong police action film is just an average piece of work (second in row) directed by Law Wing-Cheong. Film is also called "PTU 2", in reference to the first film in the series, PTU, though it is not the second entry in the Tactical Unit series. The main characters were well developed and somehow the audience feels comfortable watching Sergeant Sam (Simon Yam) and May (Maggie Siu) working together even when they actually never got along well... but I'll have to say there was a spark missing that anyone could feel anything more than just plain comfort. Even when May is promoted (as she always wins praises from her supervisor), and more experienced Sam is shut out from any chance of promotion, there was no real confrontation and fire - somehow the lukewarm is the word which comes up as useful in describing the action in this movie . The heat starts towards the end during their chase of a gang who did a daring bank robbery, but even that was too late and too little. The movie has been introduced through few film festivals and even got an award "Film of Merit" (whatever that means) of the 16th Hong Kong Film Critics Society Award, but still... it is a watchable crime action... and nothing more!

Tactical Unit: Comrades in Arms is the 5th in a series of follow up films to Johnnie To's PTU. Wing-cheong Law, who directed the first of these "Tactical Unit" films, steps back in the director's chair for this one.
This movie is entirely watchable without having seen any of the previous installments. Only the main characters and theme connect them all.

The story moves the PTU characters into the forest covered mountains this time around, rather than the populated city streets. This may sound disappointing at first, but the film is still quite entertaining. The tension between the two police teams sets up an interesting watch and this works in Simon Yam's favor.

This 90 minute picture has a moderate pace with very little action. This is not surprising to fans of these films. However, there is a great shootout in the final 15 minutes that is very Johnnie To-esque. A perfect way to end a movie.

Simon Yam, Maggie Siu, and Lam Suet all return as their regular characters and Yam really does carry this movie. Samuel Pang, Vincent Sze, and Chi-yin Wong step in as major supporting roles.

As far as Hong Kong crime thrillers go, Tactical Unit: Comrades in Arms is more than a decent watch. Fans of the previous "Tactical Unit" films, as well as PTU, will want to check this one out.
