The film has other problems than credibility. It ends with unseemly haste, it underlines its points too obviously, and its camera moves when it should be still.

The movie could use a few more points. Tadpole's main character remains muddled; at least one scene in his journey is missing.

We're to believe that a sullen adolescent, rude and completely self-absorbed, is somehow irresistible to women of all ages just because he reads Voltaire? I mean, come on.

It has little teen humour, with the majority of the cast unlikely to see 40 again, and there is not enough plot substance to constitute an incentive for the older crowd.

The terrific performances of Weaver and Neuwirth notwithstanding, little of this is very amusing. And it doesn't help that the film is visually offensive.

The worst movie of 2002: 'Any film with such a formulaic foundation...faces the burden of succeeding in spite of it, yet Tadpole just dumbly offers it back up to us.'

Short and sweet, but also more than anything else slight... Tadpole pulls back from the consequences of its own actions and revelations.

Tadpole's wafer thin sensibility is matched by its appallingly shoddy digital video look.

The film might have been more satisfying if it had, in fact, been fleshed out a little more instead of going for easy smiles.

Seems precious when it means to be precocious, and pretentious when it can least afford to be.

Tadpole was written in wisps and watery double-entendres by Heather McGowan and Niels Mueller, and the movie is so benign that its proceedings are beside the point.

Stuffy, full of itself, morally ambiguous and nothing to shout about.

A wannabe comedy of manners about a brainy prep-school kid with a Mrs. Robinson complex founders on its own preciousness -- and squanders its beautiful women.

Neither funny nor moving enough to compare to Rushmore, Murmur of the Heart or any of the other better movies on which it's modeled.

No amount of hype will turn this murky pre-frog into anything resembling an indie prince.

Most folks with a real stake in the American sexual landscape will find it either moderately amusing or just plain irrelevant.

Tadpole is emblematic of the witless ageism afflicting films: Young is cool, and too young is too cool.

A low-budget affair, Tadpole was shot on digital video, and the images often look smeary and blurry, to the point of distraction. Then again, in a better movie, you might not have noticed.
