Movie Info

You may not be familiar with the name Storm Thorgerson, but if you have even a passing interest in pop music, you've certainly seen his work. Thorgerson is a photographer and graphic designer who in 1968 partnered with his friend Aubrey Powell to form the design firm Hipgnosis, with most of their work devoted to record album covers. Hipgnosis became one of the most successful and acclaimed design studios in the world, and their work graced the covers of albums by Pink Floyd (including Dark Side Of The Moon, Wish You Were Here and Animals), Led Zeppelin (Houses of the Holy, Presence), The Rolling Stones (Goat's Head Soup), Paul McCartney and Wings (Venus and Mars, Wings At The Speed Of Sound), The Alan Parsons Project (I Robot, Pyramid, Eve), Black Sabbath (Never Say Die, Technical Ecstasy), Peter Gabriel (his first three solo albums) and many more. In 1983, Hipgnosis closed up shop, but Thorgerson has remained busy, creating unique images for a variety of bands including Muse, The Mars Volta, Audioslave and The Cranberries, and despite the rise of digital photography and computer-aided image manipulation, Thorgerson still works as he always has, staging unusual scenes in front of his camera rather than building them with pixels. Director Roddy Bogawa offers a glimpse into Thorgerson career and working methods in the documentary Taken By Storm: The Art Of Storm Thorgerson and Hipgnosis, which includes interviews with David Gilmour, Nick Mason, Peter Gabriel, Robert Plant, Alan Parsons and many more. Taken By Storm received its world premiere at the 2011 South by Southwest Film Festival.
