Audience Reviews for Tchaikovsky

This is a 2 part DVD. The "feature" is the biopic in which Ed Stoppard plays a deeply conflicted Tchaikovsky. Conflicted at first, by his separation from his mother and later by his homosexuality, both of which influence his music. Snippets of his works, performed by quite young & very talented Russian musicians, are interspersed with the telling of Tchaikovsky's life. The second part is a BBC documentary discussing the controversy surrounding Tchaikovsky's death. The biopic is better than the documentary. The biographer in the documentary has an air/attitude that just doesn't play well on film. But it is interesting to learn more about his death, since the biopic goes along with the conventional wisdom that T died of cholera. Ed Stoppard does a good job of playing Tchaikovsky & the presenter (Charles Hazelwood) has a sort of enlightening attitude that makes the biopic narration interesting. Also the biopic sets/cinematography are well done. Some of the shots in the documentary are disjointed and just plain odd.
