Movie Info

A handful of outlaws offer a look into the criminal underside of life in Iran's capitol city in this gritty comedy-drama from filmmaker Nader Takmil Homayoun. Ibrahim (Ali Ebdali) makes his living begging for change on the streets of Tehran; most folks believe he's supporting a family because he has a baby with him, but the truth is he rents the child every day from a handful of gangsters. The grand irony is Ibrahim left behind a pregnant wife, Zahara (Sara Bahrami), when he came to the city to look for work. Ibrahim shares a barren flat with two friends, shrewd cabbie Fatah (Farzin Mohades) and easily led Madjid (Missagh Zareh). One day, Ibrahim is called away after picking up the rented baby for the day, and he asks Madjid to look after the child. But Shirine (Shahrzad Kamal Zadeh), a prostitute living nearby, learns Madjid has the baby and she fools him into giving her the kid, which she hopes to sell on the black market. Now Ibrahim and Fatah have to find the baby and return it to the gangsters if they want to survive. Tehroun (the title comes from a local pronunciation of Tehran) was screened as part of the Critics Week series at the 2009 Venice International Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

The structure is more like an earnest reworking of Three Men and a Baby crossed with a Law & Order episode than the adventurous art cinema traditionally associated with Iran.
