It's kind of adorable, though, even when it's... qualitatively questionable.

It's an unsatisfactory film, a strange mixture of pedestrian scene-setting, an uncertain tone and an overarching and overused metaphor of the bees, which at one point takes off into magic realism.

There's nothing all that interesting to it, or anything that distinguishes it from other queer romance dramas.
July 24, 2019
Watery romance that has no real feeling to cling to.

Tell it to the Bees... is a period drama with no sting. There's no urgency to its message, no passion at its centre.

Yikes. That wasn't pretty.

The uneven tone leaves the film intriguing and thoughtful, but it's never as powerfully moving as it needs to be.

The leads are decent, but the frequent bee close-ups seem superfluous, and whole thing reeks of an overwrought soap, and might be better suited to the small screen than the big.

A film that unnecessarily shoots itself in the foot.

A gentle and prettily appointed romantic tragedy with likeable performances; but there's a stultifying blandness to proceedings and an implausible final act.

It's a sad quirk of timing that a film about romantic outsiders should feel like part of the herd, but a brighter spotlight would not have done it any favours.

What might have been, in more capable hands, an indie gem is instead a melodramatic TV movie.

Despite the hefty talent involved, there's a preposterous pass-agg tweeness to this film - a contrived and self-conscious affair adapted from Fiona Shaw's 2009 novel and directed by Annabel Jankel.

Holliday Grainger is absolutely phenomenal, brilliantly exploring the many sides to her character. Sadly, after a rather promising start, the film becomes very muddled and underdeveloped which is just distracting from the central story.

The performances outshine the screenplay, which is somewhat contrived yet too restrained to generate the desired sparks.

With nothing new to say and no new way of saying it, there's little to recommend in Tell It to the Bees.

It would be easy to argue that the movie's heart is in the right place, because it is. However, to apply another cliché, the road to hell is paved with good intentions.
