A greedy town boss is on a power trip and rules the people in a ruthless and unforgiving fashion. A few new men have wondered into town and the boss hopes to use them to slay the one man who is not afraid to stand against him. However, once the ruffians discover the man the boss sends them to fight stands for truth and justice, the ruffians will turn against the boss for one ultimate showdown. “If I jump, I’ll fall on those knives.” “Who cares?” Cheh Chang, director of Masked Avengers, Killer Army, The Spearman, Kid with the Golden Arm, 5 Kung Fu Daredevils, Crippled Avengers, Invincible Shaolin, Five Deadly Venoms, and the One-Armed Swordsman, delivers The Magnificent Ruffians. The storyline for this film was okay for the genre, but not as good as Kid with the Golden Arms or Masked Avengers. The action choreography was stellar (as expected from a Venoms film). “My swords can’t be sneezed at.” “My punches are not fun either.” The restaurant fights over the unpaid checks, Centipede versus all the brothers, the knives outside the window, Lizard versus the three venoms, the cigar smoking sequence, the mother punishing Toad, Lizard killing Toad, Centipede killing the double sworded warrior, double swords killing the man with the symbols, and the final fight with Lizard and the young venom versus Centipede were amongst the better portions of the film. “If you’re good at kung fu, you’ll be fine; but if you’re not, you’ll be in trouble.” The soundtrack for this film is humorous, uneven, and resembles many of our crazy 70’s pictures. The film, overall, falls in line with many of the Venom pictures; however, the storyline is not as compelling as some of my favorites. The action choreography is stunning and compelling in classic Venom fashion. This is another in a long line of entertaining Venom pictures. “All these waiters look like weaklings.” Grade: B
